“It’s exciting knowing that the community is already behind some of our ideas. “For most of us, this is our first time working on a project from which ideas or site design elements might actually be implemented,” Petersen said. Overall, the students are excited to be working on a real-world project. The designs include improving the existing trails and expanding the trail network. Melissa Petersen, landscape architecture student, said their new concepts will improve the overall circulation, especially pedestrian connections within the park and to surrounding neighborhoods. Fourth-year students are gaining leadership experiences, while third-year students are learning how to address a situation where the problem has not been scripted. They also allow students to apply concepts learned in the classroom to practical situations.
